| Focus on Abilities, Not Disabilities |
|
Communicating with a person who has a disability doesn't have to be a difficult thing to do. Here are some suggestions to help you when meeting someone who has a disability.
- Speak directly to the person rather than through a companion/attendant or to a sign language interpreter.
- If you are offering assistance, wait until the offer is accepted, stop and listen to or ask for instruction.
- Treat adults as adults, not children. Just remember to address people in a manner fitting for their actual age.
- Listen attentively when talking with people who have difficulty speaking and wait for them to finish. Never pretend to understand the person, instead ask them to repeat themselves or paraphrase what you understood and allow the person to respond.
- RELAX! Don't be embarrassed if you use common expressions that seem to relate to a person's disability. Some people think it is not polite to use words like, "see" or "look" to a blind person, or words like "listen" or "hear" to a deaf person. But it's OK; these are expressions, not related to the person's disability.
