Early Childhood Intervention

Our Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program provides teams of specialists including speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and early intervention specialists to work with children with developmental disabilities and delays. Our specialist teams use play and routine-based intervention to provide highly individualized instruction and therapy to children so they can learn motor skills, communication, and independence. The play-based intervention is geared to the child’s developmental stage, and it changes as the child progresses from one developmental stage to the next.

We include parents and caregivers in the sessions to foster a better learning environment for the child and to teach the parents how to continue intervention between sessions. In addition to including parents in the sessions, all intervention is conducted in the child’s home or daycare facility – locations that are familiar to the child and prove to be the most effective environments in which to help children learn, play and grow.

Our specialists use toys, games and songs to help the children work on their weak areas. Specialists may use games that require the child to exercise arm and back muscles, thereby strengthening them. They may also use naming games and songs to develop verbal and listening skills. Parents are taught these activities so the child continues to progress between visits.

There are several print materials thathave been developed by the State ECI Office and by ECI of Special Care & Career Services. Click here for the Order Form if you would like SCCS to send you any of the materials at no charge.
